Welcome!
July 2010

Welcome to the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel Website. Please bookmark this site so that you can easily return. There are several items I want to mention.

2010 Dinner. The Annual Dinner will be held Saturday, September 25 in Toronto. You should have received your invitation by now, and if you haven’t, please contact Karen Case ASAP (casek@staff.abanet.org) — RSVPs are due July 29.

This year the Annual Dinner has been scheduled to coincide with the fall meetings of the ABA Tax Section and Section of Real Property, Trust & Estate Law, Trust & Estate Division, allowing ACEBC members to also participate in those activities. We think that the dinner and related programs will be exceptionally entertaining and urge you to attend. The events include:
  • Casa Loma Tour (10:15 a.m.) — This is approximately a one-hour tour of the famous Edwardian era castle for fellows and guests. To learn more about this site, visit http://www.casaloma.org.
  • The Education Program (1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel) — The College and the ABA Section of Taxation will sponsor a CLE program entitled, “Don’t Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out—Terminated Employees and Employee Benefits.” A panel of experts will examine the dizzying array of employee benefits issues that must be considered in the context of employee terminations.
  • Induction Dinner at the Royal Ontario Museum (6:30 p.m. through 11:00 p.m.) — The Royal Ontario Museum is one of the world’s leading museums of natural history and world cultures (http://www.rom.on.ca describes the museum). The reception, dinner, and after-dinner desert buffet will give us an opportunity to explore some of their most famous collections, including the Dinosaur Gallery, the Curelly Gallery, the Chen Court, and the Asian Suite of Galleries.
  • As an additional feature, the museum will be hosting an exhibit in September on “The Warrior Emperor and China’s Terracotta Army,” featuring many figures and artifacts that are being shown outside of China for the first time. Further details and pricing information about this exhibit will be posted when available.

Member Teleconferences. As was announced last year, the ACEBC now gives members a chance to arrange teleconferences among themselves to discuss benefits issues. Last year two successful teleconferences were held, and so far this year we have had teleconferences on the 409A corrections procedures and the grandfather regulations under the PPACA. Click the tab marked “Member Teleconferencing” at the top of the page for an explanation of how the teleconferences will work. If you are interested in initiating a Member Teleconference, all you need to do is send a description of your proposed topic to casek@staff.abanet.org.

Members Only Area. The “Members Only Area,” is the link at the top right of the page. The password to the link has been sent to Members via a separate email. Currently the link has copies of the presentations made at the 2009 Annual Meeting (“The Market Meltdown and Its Effect on Employee Benefits: Consequences for Employees, Employers and Unions”) and the 2008 Annual Meeting (the “China Seminar”). The Board has adopted a mission statement and continually works on identifying goals and activities to meet our mission: fostering excellence in the practice of employee benefits law and advancing public understanding of employee benefits. New projects are continually being developed, and we welcome participation in the development of College activities from all of the College Fellows.
