My life in the ERISA world has been wonderfully varied, including work for benefit plans and clients that are large, small, sophisticated, simple, and all manner in-between, and involving transactions and issues of all types. I learned early the necessity of always keeping a practical perspective, and strive to "keep it simple" as much as possible. After 30 years, I retired in 2007 from the law firm of Parker, Poe, Adams & Bernstein, where I had been leader of the Employee Benefits Group. I then approached work from the in-house perspective as Asst. General Counsel, Benefits at FairPoint Communications, Inc. I have enjoyed significant pro bono volunteer work for the local Legal Services clinic, as well as leadership roles on IRS Southeast Tax Liaison Committee, Southern Employee Benefits Conf, and Charlotte Benefits Forum. I retired from the practice of law in 2011.
