William A. "Bill" Schmidt, 75, of Stanardsville and Alexandria, Virginia, died peacefully at home on November 27, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and June Schmidt (née Wood), and by his sister, Kathy Schmidt Kapsch. He is survived by his wife, Carole Hamner Schmidt, his sister, Julie Engelsberg (David) of Tucson, Arizona, his cousin, Marta Ramsey (Robert) of Charlottesville, Virginia, his brother-in-law Robert Kapsch (Perry) of Poolesville, Maryland, and his likebrothers, Tommy Miller (Pamela) of Norfolk, Virginia, and Robert Frierson (Victoria) of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Bill was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on August 22, 1948. His father was an attorney with the federal government and his mother was a homemaker. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Virginia and his LLM from the Georgetown University School of Law. Bill had a distinguished career in the areas of institutional investing and employee benefits with a specific expertise in the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). Beginning his career at Connecticut General (now CIGNA) in Hartford, he then returned to the Washington area as an attorney with the Department of Labor. From government service, he pivoted to private practice and was a partner first at Akin Gump, then Paul Hastings, and finally K&L Gates, where he practiced for more than two decades before retiring. He enjoyed teaching as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University School of Law. For years he was active in the Lawyers' Committee, now Bard Association, of the Shakespeare Theatre Company. He was an avid Shakespeare fan and had seen each of the bard's dramatic works performed multiple times. He particularly enjoyed traveling to farflung destinations to catch another performance of one of the more obscure historical plays.

While Bill found his Washington area life and work fulfilling, he was happiest at his farm in Central Virginia with his wife and their menagerie of rescued pets. He relished driving a tractor, growing vegetables, and admiring the shifting seasons from his front porch with a glass of wine in hand. He served on the Vestry as Senior Warden of Grace Episcopal Church, Stanardsville, volunteered with the Greene County Historical Society, and lent his legal expertise to the community as a member of the Greene County Board of Zoning Appeals.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 2 at 11 a.m. at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church in Earlysville, Virginia, with the Reverend Jeffrey Fishwick officiating. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to Grace Episcopal Church, Stanardsville or Homeward Trails Animal Rescue in Arlington, Virginia.
